HHMI invests $300 million in 2021 new biomedical research

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has announced grants totaling at least $300 million in support of thirty-three investigators who are tackling some of the most challenging problems in biomedical research. Each 2021 HHMI Investigator will receive roughly $9 million over a seven-year term, which is renewable pending a successful scientific review.

Open Society Foundations announces 2021 fellows
September 23, 2021
The Open Society Foundations has announced the 2021 cohort of Open Society Fellows. Launched in 2008 to assist individuals pursuing innovative and unconventional approaches to societal challenges, the program has invited proposals around a single topic since 2017. The 2021 cohort of fellows will receive project support and living stipends ranging from $80,000 to $100,000 over a year to address economic equality.

Philanthropies pledge $5 billion to 'Protecting Our Planet Challenge'

Nine philanthropic organizations have collectively pledged $5 billion over ten years in support of the creation, expansion, management, and monitoring of protected and conserved areas of land, inland water, and sea. Announced at an event convened by the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York, the commitments launch the Protecting Our Planet Challenge and will fund efforts to meet HAC's 30x30 goal to protect 30 percent of land and sea by 2030.

Hewlett awards $17 million in 'adaptation grants' to arts groups

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has announced grants totaling $17 million in support of arts organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Awarded as part of a special Adaptation Grants program, the grants are designed to help organizations plan for, test, and enact structural and financial changes that will enable them to best fulfill their missions in the years to come.
